Sam has broadened her knowledge and skills by treating people with a variety of neurological conditions over the last five years; her current clinical case load includes people with Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome and post neurosurgical complications.  She has an active interest in evidence-based practice and graduated from Keele University in 2005 with an MSc in Neuromusculoskeletal Healthcare. Sam has taught Neurological Therapy at University under-graduate level and achieved an NVQ internal verifier award when assessing other staff members for their level III NVQ in Health & Social Care.
Sam places a high priority on functional tasks within her treatment sessions and is always keen to implement innovative approaches to her therapeutic intervention; she uses the Nintendo Wii to treat physical problems and improve cognition. Sam is fully Bobath trained and recently completed an advanced Bobath course. She is also trained in the use of Biometrics and uses it to treat upper limb and perceptual problems, as well as in functional task retraining.  Sam has a special interest in splinting for people with neurological disorders and is the lead clinician for Neurological splinting and casting within the North Staffordshire area.

Sam Smith
Neurological Occupational Therapist
Sam graduated from Oxford Brookes University in 1996 with a BSc (Hons) Degree in Occupational Therapy (OT). She initially worked in South Manchester and gained experience in orthopaedics, cardiology, respiratory care and renal medicine. Sam achieved a senior clinical post specialising in Acute Stroke care in 1997. In 2003 she was promoted to Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist for Neurological Rehabilitation based at the Haywood Hospital, where she leads the OT services and has instigated a Multi-Disciplinary Spasticity Care Pathway.
